Arguably one of the most beautiful and incredible birds among all waterfowl. Wood ducks are often recognized as a symbol of courage. The colors of the male are unmistakable and their eyes are found to be a deep red. These ducks are also seen to bob their heads back and forth as they paddle through water and feed on berries and insects making them omnivores. Another interesting fact that sets them apart from other ducks is how they often nest in the cavities of trees near the water. The females will typically lay between 9 and 14 eggs and young ducklings will have to make their first jump to life from the nest to the water. After a rough population decline in the earlier 20th century, the wood duck has made a healthy comeback. Let's hope they are here for a long time to stay.
